H. Patrick Weir, Sr. (“Pat”) graduated from St. John’s University and the University of Notre Dame Law School, J.D. He was appointed Law Clerk to the Honorable Charles Vogel, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, St. Louis, MO. Upon completion of his clerkship, he joined Vogel Law Firm in Fargo where he remained until being appointed a District Judge for the Southwest District in North Dakota.
He served as District Judge for the SW Judicial District covering eight south and western counties in North Dakota. After his retirement, he was appointed a Surrogate Judge by the North Dakota Supreme Court and served as such for several months in both Grand Forks and Minot, ND. He also was honored by appointment to serve on the ND Supreme Court in several cases wherein a Justice was disqualified to serve. During his active practice, he also taught classes in Trial Advocacy at the University of North Dakota Law School, Grand Forks, ND.
In 2008, Pat was not only listed as a Super Lawyer but also rated in the top 25 of all Super Lawyers in the Great Plains region. He was nominated for membership and chosen as a Charter Member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and he is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, a Fellow in the International Society of Barristers, and listed in Best Lawyers in America®.
Pat has been invited to address the national meeting of the American College of Law and Medicine and has given many presentations, including to the North Dakota Medical Society; the annual meeting of the State Dental Association; the National Meeting of the American College of Law and Medicine, Fort Lauderdale, FL; and the joint meeting of the Minnesota and North Dakota Emergency Medical Responders. He has also given lectures for the North Dakota Bar Association CLE; the North Dakota Implement Dealers; the North Dakota Automobile Association; and others.
Pat has served as President of the North Dakota Racing Commission; Chairman of the Board for Innovis Health System (now Essentia Health), Fargo, ND; and board member of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Foundation and Home on the Range for Boys and Girls; along with serving on the University of Notre Dame Law School Advisory Board. He has also served on local zoning boards and water boards.
